Introduction to the Project

At LMB Group, we believe that every loft conversion should be tailored to the people who will be living in it. The Reynolds family in Guildford contacted us with a specific challenge. They wanted to transform their loft into a beautiful new bedroom, but the shape of their roof was a little unconventional. This meant the space would need clever design and bespoke solutions to make it both functional and attractive.

For us, projects like this are what we do best – creating seamless, practical designs that make the most of every inch of space while keeping the look cohesive and in keeping with the rest of the home.

Understanding the Client’s Vision

The Reynolds family’s main priority was storage. They wanted their new loft bedroom to have enough built-in storage to keep the room clutter-free, without compromising the sense of space and light. They also wanted the new floor to feel like a calm retreat from the busier areas of the home.

The unusual shape of the loft, with varying roof pitches and angles, meant standard furniture wouldn’t work well. This made a custom-designed solution the obvious choice, allowing us to work with the space rather than against it.

Design and Layout

We began with a detailed survey of the loft to understand its shape, dimensions and natural light sources. From there, we developed a layout that positioned the bed in the area with the most comfortable head height, while keeping the rest of the room open and easy to move around.

Along the eaves, we designed bespoke built-in wardrobes and drawers that followed the roofline perfectly. These provided generous storage while maintaining the clean lines of the room. We also incorporated a dressing area with a fitted surface that could double as a desk, giving the space flexibility for different uses.

Large Velux windows were placed to make the most of natural light, keeping the room bright and airy. The position of these windows was carefully considered to provide both light and privacy.

The Build Process

The build began with strengthening the loft floor to meet building regulation requirements for a habitable space. Once the structure was ready, we worked on creating the new walls, insulation and roof windows. Every element was measured precisely to ensure the bespoke storage units would fit perfectly when installed.

The staircase was positioned directly above the existing one to maintain a smooth flow between floors. We matched the style and finish of the staircase to the rest of the house so the new addition felt like a natural extension rather than a separate area.

Interior Finishes and Features

The Reynolds’ new loft bedroom was finished in a light, neutral colour palette to enhance the feeling of space. The built-in wardrobes and drawers were fitted with sleek, minimal handles to keep the look modern and uncluttered.

The dressing/desk area was positioned beneath a roof window so it could be used in natural daylight – ideal for both getting ready in the morning and working from home.

Lighting was a mix of recessed LED spotlights for general illumination and softer wall-mounted lights for creating a cosy atmosphere in the evenings. The combination of natural and artificial light made the room versatile for different times of day and different activities.

Challenges and Solutions

The main challenge was working with the irregular shape of the loft. Standard storage units simply wouldn’t have fitted, so we designed and built everything to measure. This meant using every available corner effectively while keeping the overall feel open and uncluttered.

We also needed to ensure the storage didn’t dominate the room. By integrating it into the walls and keeping the finishes in line with the rest of the décor, we created a practical yet subtle solution.

The Final Result

The Reynolds family now have a stylish, functional loft bedroom that makes the most of its unique shape. The bespoke storage has given them all the space they need for clothes and belongings, while the thoughtful layout ensures the room feels spacious and comfortable.

From the outside, the new roof windows blend neatly into the property’s profile, while inside, the loft feels bright, welcoming and completely tailored to the family’s needs.

Client Feedback

The Reynolds told us they couldn’t believe how much storage had been incorporated without making the room feel smaller. They loved the bespoke approach and the way every detail had been thought through. For them, the loft has become one of their favourite spaces in the house.

Conclusion

This Guildford loft conversion by LMB Group for the Reynolds family is a great example of how even an unusually shaped loft can be turned into a beautiful, practical living space. With clever design, bespoke joinery and a focus on the client’s needs, we created a seamless extension to their home that they will enjoy for many years to come.
